Science at the intersection of function, system, and human potential

The Journal of Functional Neurology and Integrated Systems (JFNIS) is an international, peer-reviewed, open-access journal dedicated to functional neurology, integrated neurophysiology, sensorimotor control, reflex physiology, concussion rehabilitation, and systems-based approaches to human function.

The journal was established to provide a rigorous scholarly platform for research and theory that examines the nervous system as a dynamic, integrated, and adaptive system. Rather than focusing only on isolated structures, isolated symptoms, or linear models of dysfunction, JFNIS emphasizes the interactions between sensory input, reflex circuits, brainstem regulation, cerebellar modulation, basal ganglia-thalamic loops, cortical networks, autonomic function, and behavior.

The journal supports responsible innovation. Emerging clinical models and theoretical frameworks are welcome, but they must be presented with methodological clarity, appropriate caution, and transparent distinction between evidence, interpretation, and hypothesis. The journal does not aim to promote a single profession, method, or doctrine. Its purpose is to support the development of a more precise, critical, and scientifically grounded field.

Many clinical problems cannot be understood through single-system explanations

Many clinical problems, especially in rehabilitation, concussion, sensorimotor dysfunction, and functional neurological presentations, are difficult to understand through isolated anatomical structures, single-symptom categories, or linear causal models.

In conditions such as persistent post-concussion symptoms, vestibular intolerance, visual-vestibular conflict, autonomic dysregulation, brain fatigue, motor control impairment, and functional movement disorders, the problem is rarely confined to local tissue damage. What changes is the coordination between systems: sensory input becomes imprecise, reflex circuits become dysregulated, brainstem function alters gain and gating, cerebellar circuits affect timing and error correction, basal ganglia-thalamic loops shift selection and readiness, and cortical networks are burdened by inefficient integration.

There is therefore a need for a journal that specifically addresses these integrated problems, one that allows serious academic treatment of clinical models that do not always fit neatly into traditional disciplinary silos.

Journal of Functional Neurology and Integrated Systems was established to provide exactly that platform.

Journal of Functional Neurology and Integrated Systems was founded to create a scholarly space for this work. The journal welcomes research, theory, and clinical frameworks that attempt to connect mechanism with function. It supports innovation, but not exaggeration. It values clinical insight, but not unsupported claims. It welcomes theory, but only when theory remains clearly distinguishable from established evidence.

The goal is to contribute to a more mature and scientifically grounded field — where functional neurology and integrated systems approaches can be developed, tested, challenged, and refined.

Six principles that guide every editorial decision

The journal is guided by a commitment to scientific integrity, clinical relevance, and mechanistic clarity. These principles apply to every manuscript evaluated — from case reports to large-scale trials.

I.
Mechanistic plausibility
Clinical models must be grounded in biologically and physiologically defensible mechanisms. This does not require large RCTs for every claim — but it does require that explanatory models are scientifically coherent.
II.
Evidence hierarchy with clinical realism
RCTs and meta-analyses are valued, but new and complex clinical fields often develop through observational studies, case series, mechanistic research, and theoretical models. What matters is clarity about what is documented versus plausible versus hypothetical.
III.
Transparency over certainty
The journal prioritizes clarity over conviction. Authors are expected to distinguish clearly between data, interpretation, hypothesis, clinical experience, and speculation — and to label each accordingly.
IV.
Clinical relevance
Research should contribute to better understanding, assessment, or treatment of human function. The journal is particularly interested in work where theory and practice are connected without overstating either.
V.
Systems thinking
The nervous system does not function as a collection of isolated parts. The journal prioritizes work that examines relationships between structures, loops, networks, regulatory mechanisms, and behavioral function.
VI.
Responsible development of emerging fields
The journal supports the development of functional neurology and integrated systems models — not through uncritical legitimization, but through precision, self-criticism, methodological discipline, and responsible academic dialogue.

Toward a definition of Functional Neurology

Functional Neurology has been practiced globally for over four decades, yet no peer-reviewed publication has offered a formal, operational definition of the field. This is a genuine gap — one that creates barriers to research, education, and interdisciplinary recognition.

The founding editors of JFNIS are actively working toward such a definition. The framework currently under development centres on the assessment of neural network function through observable clinical outputs, the use of feedback-driven intervention to restore integrative capacity, and clinical reasoning grounded in neuroanatomical knowledge. This work is still in progress, and we are not yet ready to present it as a finalised formulation.

A key challenge in defining the field is distinguishing it from adjacent disciplines. One emerging perspective holds that what is distinctive is not the methods used, but the clinical object: neurological dysfunction that falls outside the explanatory reach of structural pathology — patients with real, measurable neurological dysregulation who present with normal imaging and normal laboratory findings. Another perspective holds that the distinctiveness lies in the reasoning method itself: the architecturally informed, closed-loop, network-level approach to clinical assessment and intervention. Both views are under active discussion. This debate is productive — and it is precisely why a formal peer-reviewed definition is needed.

Work in Progress

A formal definitional paper is being prepared by Antonucci MM & Jay K. (2026) and will be submitted for peer review in due course. The working concepts presented here in brief reflect the current state of that ongoing work, not a final or authoritative claim. They are offered in the spirit of transparency about where this field is heading and what JFNIS is built around.

The emerging framework draws on five core concepts, each grounded in established neuroscience. These are working constructs — they may be refined as the definitional work progresses:

Efferent Expression

Observable outputs of the nervous system — posture, balance, gait, oculomotor function, reflexes, and autonomic tone — as primary clinical data for network assessment, alongside patient-reported symptoms and structural findings.

Neural Network Function

Neurological function understood as an emergent property of distributed networks — multiple nodes interacting across white matter tracts — rather than as the output of isolated brain regions.

Closed-Loop Modulation

Feedback-driven therapeutic adjustment in which the clinical response to each stimulus informs the next intervention — each stimulus serving as both treatment and diagnostic probe.

Integration Integrity

The capacity of the nervous system to coordinate sensory input, motor output, and internal states into coherent, adaptive behaviour — drawing on Sherrington's (1906) concept of integrative action.

Architecturally Informed Reasoning

Clinical decision-making guided by knowledge of neuroanatomical connectivity and circuit-level function — using understood anatomy to infer network dysfunction from clinical signs and to select targeted interventions.

Nine domains of integrated human function

JFNIS exclusively considers human-subject research with direct clinical or applied translational relevance. Animal studies or purely mechanistic laboratory investigations without human applicability are outside scope. Manuscripts that present unsupported clinical claims, promote proprietary methods without methodological transparency, or fail to distinguish between evidence, interpretation, and hypothesis will not be considered regardless of topic.

JFNIS operates a double-blind peer review process. All identities remain confidential throughout the review cycle. Manuscripts are evaluated by a minimum of two independent expert reviewers. Initial decisions are targeted within 4–6 weeks from submission.

Reviewer Honorarium Policy

JFNIS provides a USD 100 honorarium to each reviewer upon submission of a completed and timely peer review. This applies to all reviewers regardless of institutional affiliation or seniority.

We believe rigorous peer review is the foundation of scientific publishing — and that the time and expertise of reviewers deserves genuine recognition, not just acknowledgement. The honorarium also serves a practical purpose: a compensated review is a committed review. We expect all reviewers who accept an invitation to deliver a thorough, constructive assessment within the agreed timeframe.

Reviewer compensation is funded directly from Article Processing Charges and is independent of any editorial decision. Acceptance or rejection of a manuscript has no bearing on honorarium eligibility.

Why JATS XML matters for your article

Every manuscript accepted by JFNIS is published in JATS (Journal Article Tag Suite) XML format from the very first issue. This is the technical standard required by PubMed Central, Scopus, and Web of Science. When JFNIS achieves PMC indexing, all previously published articles will be back-indexed retroactively, meaning articles published in Year 1 will appear in PubMed alongside Year 3 articles. Your work will not be stranded outside the index. This is an explicit commitment of JFNIS publishing policy.

JFNIS is not a commercial publishing enterprise. It operates on a cost-recovery model — article processing charges are set to cover the real costs of peer review, typesetting, DOI registration, and infrastructure, without generating profit for its owners.

Every decision about how this journal is built — from its pricing to its editorial standards to its technology — is made with one question in mind: what serves the scientific community best?

A Long-Term Vision

Should JFNIS grow to generate surplus revenue beyond the costs of running the journal, it is the intention of the publisher to direct those funds toward a research stipend programme for early-career researchers working in functional neurology, integrated neurophysiology, and related fields.

This is a long-term aspiration, not a current programme. But it reflects the belief that a journal in this field should give back to the researchers who make it possible — and that the purpose of sustainable publishing is to reinvest in the science itself.

A Note on Indexing and Scientific Legitimacy

A common misconception in academic publishing holds that a journal's absence from PubMed or PubMed Central is evidence of reduced scientific standards, or worse, that it signals a predatory publication. This belief is understandable but incorrect — and it is worth addressing directly.

PubMed Central is a curated archive, not a quality certification service. Acceptance requires a formal application process that is only open to journals with an established publication history, typically a minimum of one to two years of consistent output. Frontiers in Neuroscience, PLOS ONE, and many journals now considered gold-standard open access publications spent their early years outside PubMed — not because they lacked rigour, but because eligibility requires time. The same applies to Scopus and Web of Science, both of which operate selective evaluation processes with defined waiting periods for new journals.

A predatory journal, by contrast, is characterised by fabricated peer review, undisclosed fees, false claims of indexing, absence of genuine editorial oversight, and exploitation of authors. JFNIS is the opposite of this. Our peer review process, editorial board, publication ethics framework, conflict of interest policies, authorship standards, and technical infrastructure are publicly documented on this website and comply with COPE guidelines. We make no claims we cannot substantiate.

What we offer authors today is a rigorously managed, ethically operated, fully open access publication with DOI registration via Crossref, immediate Google Scholar discoverability, and JATS XML archiving from Volume 1 — the precise technical format required for retroactive back-indexing when PubMed Central and Scopus eligibility is reached. Every article published now will be submitted for back-indexing at that point. That is a binding commitment, not an aspiration.

Scientific legitimacy is not conferred by a database. It is built through methodological rigour, editorial integrity, transparent processes, and the quality of the work itself. JFNIS is designed to support exactly that — from the first article we publish.

Dr. Kenneth Jay, PhD is a researcher, clinician, educator, and author with a background in human physiology, neurorehabilitation, movement science, stress physiology, pain, performance optimization, and applied systems thinking. He holds a PhD in Human Physiology and Clinical Biomechanics from the University of Southern Denmark and an MSc in Human Physiology from the University of Copenhagen.

He serves as Clinical Research Director at Cervello A/S (Denmark), Associate Professor in Medical Education at the University of Central Florida (UCF), Adjunct Professor at the Carrick Institute for Graduate Studies, and Chair of the Carrick Institute Institutional Review Board (IRB). His research spans neurophysiology, sensorimotor control, reflex function, pain science, rehabilitation, and integrated human performance.

With over 2,800 citations, an h-index of 28, and more than 46 peer-reviewed publications, his work has appeared in leading journals including the Scandinavian Journal of Work, Environment & Health, the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, Pain Physician, BMC Public Health, and Frontiers in Neurology.

He is the co-author of the NERD model (Network Entrapment by Reflex Dysfunction; Antonucci & Jay 2026, Frontiers in Systems Neuroscience, 19:1673195), a published conceptual framework that reframes persistent post-concussion symptoms as emergent phenomena arising from reflex circuit dysfunction across five functional nodes (sensory interface, reflex-brainstem hub, cerebellar module, basal ganglia-thalamic modulator, and cerebral cortex), with a formal mathematical model of network entrapment dynamics.

JFNIS is a purpose-driven project. Kenneth founded the journal not as a commercial venture, but out of a genuine conviction that functional neurology and integrated neurophysiology deserve a rigorous, accessible, and independent scientific home, one that operates transparently, treats authors fairly, and reinvests in the field rather than extracting from it. That same conviction underlies his long-term aspiration to direct any surplus generated by the journal toward research stipends for early-career scientists in the field.
